876 SCAM!!!

I am in a mood to rant so bear with me. I am sick and tired of these jamaicain 876 phone scams especially so since i ended up with some of their numbers on my own phone bill. They did not contact me personally but some one very close to me who is elderly and not computer wise let alone scam wise. because of these calls she thought were free her phone is now disconnected and her bill is a whooping near 900.00 for 2 months and from what i have learend .. that is actually better than some have gotten. I am including a list of numbers to look for on your phone bills under internation calls.

Now if you find these calls on your bill all hope is not lost. There is help. You can call your local phone company .. at least I know for sure verizon will do this .. and they will remove the calls one time from your bill as long as you cooperate and speak to their fraud dept. if it happens again you are on your own i imagine. now here is the part that also burns my backside.. the calls are listed as international.. and most international calls can be blockd with a call gate .. which is not free... but these calls even though they are international are not stopped by this call gate ...because you need not do more than dial a 1 before the number like you would call the next state over from you.I live in a state with a lot of elderly and i shudder to think how many poor unsuspecting people have fallen victim to such things. If you think it can never happen to you guess again. I live in a tiny tiny village.. not even on most maps..and it happened to not only me but someone else i know well. I will not say more than that out of respect for the person's feelings. we cannot as good citizens allow this to continue to happen especially to our elderly .. i mean think if it happened to your mother, father,, grandparents or any other person who dearly is loved and does not deserve this thrust on them when they have given so much of their lives to us .. there has to be something that can be done!!! I mean i have a calling plan that allows me to call all over the states for one price a month, but it does not cover the 876 calls because jamaica is not one of the states. it is a seperate country and yet.. the phone number is dialed as if it were in the states and i for one do not understand why . someone needs to make that number have to be dialed like any other out of the country call or include it in calling plans maybe it would help .. anyway i needed to vent and i hope this information will help someone to not be scamed .. btw this particular scam .. they call you and have you call them back .. promising you that you won a large cash prize and /or a car .. the best rule of thumb is this.. if it looks too good to be true.. it probably is.
